If like me you have hear people chatting on social media about free radicals and you're wondering what on earth they are and how they can help you to stay well, I have done the research for you. A diet high in antioxidants can look after the free radicals in your body and support you to stay in a well balanced state.  

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules that have one or more unpaired electrons in their outer shell. This makes them unstable and eager to react with other molecules in order to steal electrons and achieve stability.  

Free radicals can be generated through various natural and artificial processes, such as metabolism, radiation, and pollution. 

Although free radicals are necessary for many biological processes, they can also cause damage to cells and tissues by oxidizing molecules, including lipids, proteins, and DNA. This oxidative damage can lead to a variety of health problems, including cancer, heart disease, and aging. 

Antioxidants are molecules that can neutralize free radicals by donating an electron without becoming unstable themselves. Eating a diet rich in antioxidants, such as fruits and vegetables, can help reduce the damage caused by free radicals in the body. 

 

What plants improve free radicals 

Plants contain a wide range of natural compounds that have antioxidant properties and can help reduce the damage caused by free radicals in the body. Here are some examples of plants that are known for their antioxidant properties: 

  1. Berries - such as blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, and cranberries are rich in polyphenols, which are potent antioxidants. 
  1. Green leafy vegetables - such as spinach, kale, and collard greens, are also rich in polyphenols, as well as vitamins C and E, which have antioxidant properties. 
  1. Citrus fruits - such as oranges, grapefruits, and lemons, contain high levels of vitamin C, which is a powerful antioxidant. 
  1. Nuts - such as almonds, walnuts, and pistachios, contain high levels of vitamin E, which is another potent antioxidant. 
  1. Herbs - such as rosemary, thyme, and oregano, contain high levels of polyphenols and other compounds with antioxidant properties. 
  1. Green tea - contains a compound called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which is a potent antioxidant. 

It's important to note that a healthy, balanced diet that includes a variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and whole grains is the best way to ensure that you're getting all the nutrients and antioxidants your body needs to stay healthy and fight free radicals. 

 

Which herbs are best for antioxidants 

Herbs are an excellent source of antioxidants, and some of the best herbs for antioxidants include: 

  1. Rosemary - contains several antioxidant compounds, including carnosic acid and rosmarinic acid, which have been shown to protect against oxidative stress. 
  1. Thyme - contains high levels of thymol, a potent antioxidant that has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor properties. 
  1. Oregano - contains several antioxidant compounds, including rosmarinic acid, thymol, and carvacrol, which have been shown to have anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, and anti-cancer properties. 
  1. Sage - contains several antioxidant compounds, including rosmarinic acid and carnosic acid, which have been shown to have anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties. 
  1. Basil - contains high levels of flavonoids and other antioxidant compounds, which have been shown to have anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and cardioprotective properties. 
  1. Cinnamon - contains several antioxidant compounds, including cinnamaldehyde, which has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anti-diabetic properties. 

These herbs can be used fresh or dried in cooking, as well as in teas and supplements. However, it's important to consult with a healthcare professional before taking any supplements or herbs, as they may interact with other medications or medical conditions.
